STEAM Pedagogy

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics — preparing students for a changing world.

What Is STEAM?

More than the sum of its parts

STEAM brings Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics together through both individual disciplines and connected, hands-on learning. Students investigate ideas, design solutions, make and test prototypes, and apply their learning to real-world challenges.

Across Senior School, students are encouraged to study at least two STEAM courses. Learning connects classroom knowledge with practical experiences—from the STEM Garden to Design and Technologies woodwork and metalwork—so students can explore engineering, materials, systems and the possibilities of future careers.

integrated study units in development

The global economy is changing. Current jobs are disappearing due to automation and new jobs are emerging every day as a result of technological advances. STEAM empowers individuals with the skills to succeed and adapt to this changing world.

At Denmark SHS

What are we doing?

Students are encouraged to value the diversity of choices available to them and to recognise the importance of STEAM in their future.

As part of our integrated approach, we are developing study units in:

Robotics from Year 7 to Year 10

From Year 7 to Year 10, students build engineering and robotics skills through hands-on projects. They explore coding, design, construction and automation, then test and refine their ideas—developing technical knowledge, creativity and problem-solving along the way. This work connects naturally with Design and Technologies, including woodwork and metalwork, where students learn to shape materials and turn plans into practical solutions.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence

In Year 8 Advanced AI, students go beyond using artificial intelligence to explore how it works. Through supervised machine learning, they collect and classify data, train and evaluate computer-vision models, and integrate AI into interactive web applications. Students encounter emerging technologies through practical development, real-world problem-solving and the creation of intelligent solutions.

Year 7 Launch Program

In 2027, the school will pioneer its new Year 7 Launch Program, bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics together through future-focused, practical learning. Students will investigate, design, make and improve solutions, building foundations for further study in STEAM and Design and Technologies.
