About the Subject

Reasoning, problem solving and fluency

Mathematics at Denmark SHS develops students' ability to understand and apply mathematical ideas with confidence and fluency. Students build conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and strategic problem-solving skills that are essential for further study and everyday life.

The WA Curriculum Mathematics framework focuses on three proficiency strands — Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning — alongside the content strands of Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability.

Course Offerings

Mathematics across the year groups

Mathematics is compulsory from Year 7 to Year 10, with multiple senior pathways to suit every student's goals and career direction.

In Years 7–10, all students study the Western Australian Curriculum Mathematics program. Content covers Number & Algebra (fractions, integers, linear equations, quadratics), Measurement & Geometry (area, volume, trigonometry, transformations), and Statistics & Probability (data analysis, probability). Students at all levels are challenged and supported — extension and intervention programs are available.

Number & Algebra

Operations with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, patterns, equations, functions and graphing — the foundation of mathematical thinking.

Measurement & Geometry

Length, area, volume, time, trigonometry, transformations and geometric reasoning — applying mathematics to the physical world.

Statistics & Probability

Collecting, organising and interpreting data; understanding chance events and probability distributions to draw informed conclusions.

Problem Solving

Investigating unfamiliar problems, selecting appropriate strategies, modelling with mathematics and communicating solutions clearly.

Mathematical Reasoning

Constructing logical arguments, identifying patterns, proving conjectures and evaluating the reasonableness of results.

Digital Tools

Using CAS calculators, spreadsheets and graphing software to explore mathematical concepts, verify results and solve complex problems.

Senior School Pathways

Your Mathematics pathway in Years 11 & 12

The most advanced mathematics course — studied alongside Methods. Covers vectors, complex numbers, calculus, matrices and proof. Essential for engineering, physics and pure mathematics at university.
Covers differential and integral calculus, statistics, probability and functions. Required for science, engineering, medicine, commerce and IT at most universities. Strong foundation for STEM pathways.
Focuses on financial mathematics, matrices, networks, statistics and growth models. Suitable for business, social sciences, health, and many university courses not requiring calculus.
Practical mathematics for everyday life and work — personal budgeting, measurement, data and chance. Suitable for students pursuing VET, trades, early childhood, and general employment pathways.
