About the Subject Area

Understanding people, place and society

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) at Denmark SHS develops students' understanding of the world through the disciplines of History, Geography, Civics & Citizenship, and Economics & Business. Students build the knowledge, skills and values to become informed, active and responsible citizens.

The WA Curriculum HASS framework develops students' capacity to question, research, analyse, evaluate and communicate their understandings. Students apply inquiry-based learning to examine significant issues from local, national and global perspectives.

HASS Disciplines

Subject areas in years 7–10

In Years 7 to 10, students explore all four HASS disciplines, building a rich understanding of the world around them.

History

From ancient civilisations to the modern world — examining how past events and people have shaped the societies we live in today.

Geography

Exploring the physical and human world — landforms, environments, urbanisation, sustainability, and global interconnections.

Civics & Citizenship

Understanding Australia's system of government, democratic values, legal rights and responsibilities, and how citizens participate in society.

Economics & Business

Exploring how individuals, businesses and governments make decisions about the use of resources — budgeting, entrepreneurship, markets and global trade.

Inquiry & Research

Developing the skills to question, investigate, analyse and communicate findings — the foundation of all HASS learning.

Global Perspectives

Examining local, national and international issues — developing empathy, critical thinking and an understanding of our interconnected world.

Senior School Pathways

Humanities courses in years 11 & 12

Examines key events, movements and developments of the 20th and 21st centuries. Students analyse causes and consequences of major world events, develop historical thinking skills and produce extended historical essays.

Investigates spatial patterns and processes in the physical and human world. Students conduct fieldwork, analyse geographical data and explore local and global environmental issues. ATAR and General options available.

Develops students’ understanding of financial management,

accounting processes and business decision-making in personal and workplace contexts. Students learn to prepare and analyse financial records, use accounting software and spreadsheets, and apply problem-solving and organisational skills to real-world financial situations.

Humanities opens many doors

Humanities subjects are highly regarded by universities for courses in law, teaching, journalism, business, social work, psychology and public policy. Talk to your Year Coordinator about which combination suits your goals.
